WHEN THE PAIN DOESN’T GO AWAY
Knowing the difference between injuries such as tendonitis and muscle soreness can prevent disabling injuries and discouraging layoffs. Muscle soreness usually eases with exercise. Tendonitis can too, but often it will become worse, especially with the use of heavy weights or with over-training. Pain that results from injury usually gets worse with exercise. If aching persists following workouts, try cutting down your training time or decreasing your intensity.
WEIGHT BELTS? DEFINITELY!
Weight belts are a benefit whether performing multiple rep sets or one rep max exercises. Studies show the effectiveness of a weight belt in providing intra-abdominal pressure which is a necessity for reducing spinal compression and harsh forces. This decreases the possibility of serious back injuries. Remember, back pain is more often the result of multiple micro traumas which weaken the supportive structures, than is caused from one heavy lift. Studies also reveal the hamstring and vastus lateralis muscles are used to a greater degree when a belt is worn as opposed to a no belt set.
LADIES BEWARE!
The frequent wearing of women’s pump can result in a shortening of the Achilles tendon due to the continuous contraction of the tendon when heels are worn. This causes the tendon to strengthen in the contracted state, resulting in a partial weakness of the flexion tendons and can lead to problems of the foot, calf, hamstring, hips and low back through the domino effect. Calf raises and a good stretching program are a great preventative approach.
GROWING PAINS NOT LIKELY
If your child is experiencing back, knee, ankle or elbow pain and has been diagnosed as suffering from growing pains, they deserve another opinion. Growing pains is a widely overused diagnosis, when physicians can’t locate an underlying cause. Consult another healthcare provider. Your child’s health is worth it. A little pearl, I have had excellent results using ionized calcium supplements for relieving bone growth pain.
ARTHRITIS, MAYBE NOT!
If you are experiencing painful joints when exercising or just through daily use, and your doctor tells you it may be due to arthritis and something you’ll just have to live with, you may be a victim of a misdiagnosed musculoskeletal disorder. This deserves the attention of a musculoskeletal specialist, that joint pain may just be something you can live without.
WATER WHILE YOU WORK
Studies shows that drinking water while you work out will (1) increase your performance, (2) raise cardiac output (heart stroke volume), and (3) reduce the amount of increase in heart rate.
SAFER IN THE SUN
Recent studies show, the rays emitted by tanning booths may be more dangerous for your skin than sunlight. New research by The American Academy of dermatology and skin cancer foundation say ultraviolet-A (UVA) rays of tanning lamps penetrate deeper than ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays of the sun therapy causing more long-term cell damage and increased risk of skin cancer.
LET IT BE KNOWN
Whiplash victims who continue to complain about impaired muscle control and balance, may be suffering not only from actual neck injuries or nerve damage, but because of inner ear damages caused by the whiplash injury. Intake of B6 in excess of 2mg RDA, helps to alleviate feelings of confusion, lethargy and depression. If your legs cramp at night when you are sleeping, you may be suffering from a magnesium deficiency.
